Drat, it's been so long since I watched LABYRINTH that it would seem like a new movie to me now! I do remember that I found the ending very comforting and satisfying, and I think it's for the reasons you say. (Also, I woul have loved to see David Bowie play the Joker in the 1989 BATMAN...!)
You are so right about our fictional characters being imaginary friends. It's probably an elaboration of children acting out interactions between their toys and action figures. Some of us shift from playing with actual objects to playing with imaginary ones through written words or art.
A frequent delight to me is when a bit of dialogue or a reaction from a character just pops out spontaneously. It must be an illusion caused by my subconscious working on its own but I enjoy it when Unicorn or Uncle Pao throw out a wisecrack that makes me smile as if I'd never heard it coming. This is a strange and satisfying hobby.
